WHAT IS YOUNG CAREERIST?

The Virginia Allen Young Careerist (YC) program is a specialty program developed to help young professional women polish their skills for leadership and presentations.  The purpose of the program is to recognize the achievements of young working women between the ages of 21 and 35, inclusive by May 31 of the current federation year, and to introduce them to the many diverse opportunities available with a membership in Business and Professional Women (BPW).  In addition, Candidates must have worked for at least one full year; working, training or attending school; and support the goals and objectives of the Ohio BPW Legislative Platform

WHEN DO I BEGIN TO RECRUIT?    NOW!!!!!!

HOW DO I RECRUIT?

Finding candidates is as simple as sharing the opportunity.  If you don’t know many people who show interest in competing, you may consider looking for people who speak for their profession.  Teachers, nurses, police officers and those in service positions or sales.  If you don’t know these people personally, you may want to go to an administrator, or chief and tell them about the opportunity.  Provide them with amply handouts and ask that they present the handouts to people who they feel would do a good job.  This way, the employer shares the information for you and makes their employees feel good, as they were selected by their employer to receive the information.

DON’T FORGET YOUR CURRENT MEMBERSHIP.

CHECK TO SEE IF ANY OF YOUR LOCAL OR REGION MEMBERS MEET OUR CRITERIA TO COMPETE!!

Take brochures to businesses that may have people who fit the criteria of a competitor.

Ask local managers, principals and leaders to distribute the materials to those who they feel may be quality candidates.

ALWAYS have information about YC available at meetings and events.  Encourage all local members to recruit, not just the Chair.

THE CHALLENGE

Each Local holds a YC event to offer ALL YC competitors to present to the membership.  Locals are to have a panel of judges to critique each candidate to have them better prepare for the Region Competition.  Local can offer the candidates a free one year BPW membership if their budget allows.  Locals should pay for ALL YC competitors to attend their Region competition.

Locals are encouraged to send multiple YC competitors to the Region Competition!  Many think you can only send one.         (Locals merely host an event to give the candidates the opportunity to present their speech & interview process.  This is NOT a competition at the Local level.)

Each Region is to hold a YC Competition.  The winner of the Region will then go on to compete at the State Level.  If the winner is unable to attend they are encouraged to send the second-place winner to compete at state.

NOTE:  There shall be a minimum of three impartial judges in the selection/evaluation procedure at the local, region and state levels.  One judge will be a BPW member.
