Young Careerist

2016-2017 Young Careerist Overview

Chair, Liz Herrell

The Virginia Allen Young Careerist (YC) program is a specialty program developed to help young professional women polish their skills for leadership and presentations. The purpose of the program is to recognize the achievements of young working women, between the ages of 21 and 35, and to introduce them to the many diverse opportunities available with a membership in Business and Professional Women (BPW). In addition, Candidates must have worked full time for at least one full year; living, working, training or attending school; and support the goals and objectives of the BPW/Ohio legislative platform.

Finding candidates is as simple as sharing the opportunity. If you don’t know many people who show interest in competing, you may consider looking for people who speak for their profession. Teachers, nurses, police officers and those in service positions or sales often speak at work. If you don’t know these people personally, you may want to go to an administrator, or chief and tell them about the opportunity. Provide them with ample handouts and ask that they present the handouts to people who they feel would do a good job. This way, the employer shares the information for you, and makes their employee feel good, as they were selected by their employer to receive the information.

  • Don’t forget your current membership. Check to see if any of your local or region members meet our criteria for competing.
  • Take brochures to businesses that may have people who fit the criteria of a competitor.
  • Ask local managers, principals and leaders to distribute the materials to those who they feel may be quality candidates.Always give special attention to those who communicate for a living (teachers, police officers, nurses, business women, etc.).
  • ALWAYS have information about YC available at meetings and events. Encourage all local members to recruit, not just the Chair.

Each holds a YC Competition, and gives a free one year BPW membership to the winner who participants in the Region Competition.
Each Region holds a YC Competition, and insures their participant attends the State Competition.
